A biogas plant, also known as a biodigester, is a facility that utilizes organic materials to produce biogas through a process called anaerobic digestion. The organic waste could include food scraps, animal manure, agricultural residues, and sewage. Biogas mainly consists of methane (50-70%), carbon dioxide, and traces of other gases. It can be used similarly to natural gas for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. Biogas production from organic waste helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating the impact of waste decomposition in landfills and minimizing methane release into the atmosphere.

The 300kg/day Biogas Plant at GIM manages wet waste disposal and generates 20kg/day of biogas. This biogas fuels one of the GIM’s cafeterias.
It aligns with SDG Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 13: Climate Action.
