An endemic to the Western Ghats, the evergreen Kokum tree or Goa Butter tree is prized for its antioxidant-rich fruit utilized in Ayurveda for its digestive properties. Garcinol, the antioxidant, is known as an antibacterial, antiviral, anticarcinogenic and antiulceration agent. The seeds yield Kokum butter, revered for skincare and prized as an ingredient in gourmet chocolates. Apart from this, the fruit’s red tangy pulp has medicinal digestive uses and extensive culinary uses due to its souring nature. Goa’s most famous Solkadhi is a refreshing drink made using this fruit. Some varieties of this tree from Maharashtra have received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The flowering period of this tree is from November to February.
